Hello, Garbonians! I've tried to maintain a peaceful heart and a silent tongue about the uncertainties and fears gripping our nation, but I'm breaking my silence in an attempt to encourage us to remain mindful and hopeful. I was reminded of how friendships and community are the bedrock of humanity. I want to share a little story from my childhood that offers some perspective, as well as a gentle reminder of the importance of community and connection. When I was just six years old, I found myself in Fort Davis, Texas, holding my Mom's hand as we browsed through some of their small shops. A refreshing rain shower had ended. As the clouds vanished, a gorgeous, large rainbow stretched across the sky, reflecting off the wet pavement. The end of the rainbow seemed very close to us. I became so excited! I tugged on my mother's hand, urging her to see if we could find the elusive pot of gold at the end. Dismayed to learn it wasn't there, Mom quickly reassured me, saying, "Oh, sweetheart, it must be on the other side!" Without thinking, I suggested we go to the other side of the rainbow to find it because surely we could use that treasure. Her response brought me back down to earth: "It's too far away, and your dad has the car, and he won't be back for an hour. Besides, whoever finds it is probably just as lucky as we would have been!" In that moment, she taught me something profound: the value of people over possessions and the importance of keeping our hearts open to our friends and neighbors. She grew up as a preacher's child, and I absorbed the lessons she learned about love, community, and the joy of giving--qualities that are so essential, especially in times like these. Today, as many of us navigate through uncertainties and fears, I encourage us to look for the rainbows in our friendships and our neighborhoods. Let's support one another and cherish the connections we've built.
