LOCAL SALONS AIMS TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT COLD CAPS FOR CANCER PATIENTS TO HELP PRESERVE THEIR NATURAL HAIR DURING CHEMO

AUSTIN, TEXAS) Marsha Power, owner of Garbo A Salon & Spa, was diagnosed with breast cancer during the winter of 2017. After being a prominent force in the beauty industry for more than 40 years, the prospect of losing her hair meant the loss of her identity.

Marsha started her career in 1974 working alongside other aspiring artists in the beauty industry. In February 1985, Marsha opened the doors of Garbo A Salon for other talented artist to learn and thrive under her careful guidance. After opening Garbo’s second location in 2017, Marsha was diagnosed with breast cancer.

In the winter of 2017, Marsha faced with one of the hardest struggles she would have to endure. The mental and physical struggle of living with cancer has no comparison. The side effects of treatment can almost out way the benefits; fatigue, nausea, and nerve pain are a few of the most common side effects. However, the most evident side effect is hair loss.

Chemotherapy causes the body to attack all rapidly growing cancer cells. Unfortunately, it can also cause the body to attack other cells like nerve ending and hair follicles. From someone who has been in the beauty industry for so long, Marsha was faced with only one option: to lose something that she has spent her life appreciating.

However, Marsha refused to take that as the only option. She was eventually contacted by a woman who had also endured chemotherapy and shared her knowledge about Medical Cold Caps that saved her hair.

Medical Cold Caps have been used in Europe for more than 20 years to help reduce hair loss in patients going through chemotherapy. This technology has not been a prominent source of treatment in America, but a few medical practitioners offer information about the caps.

After learning more about these caps, Marsha invested in one and found the answer she was looking for.

“I was shocked that my own industry did not know about this technology that was helping other women keep their hair,” said Marsha. “Keeping my hair offered me a sense of privacy and dignity, rather than succumbing to my illness.”

Marsha completed her treatment and was considered in remission in July of this year with a full head of hair. After using the cold caps and seeing what they can do for other women struggling through chemotherapy, Marsha continues to raise awareness and support of this miraculous technology.

“I feel that my diagnosis was a blessing,” said Marsha. “It was a gift of knowledge about this product so that I am able to help others who are going through similar circumstances.”

HairToStay Project:
This October, Garbo A Salon is raising funds in support of Hair to Stay, a local organization that provides Cold Caps to women who are experiencing chemotherapy treatment. Each Cold Cap is valued at approximately $1,000.

For every $5 donation, Garbo will enter the customer in a raffle to win a basket of local Austin goodies worth more than $500. In addition to this fundraiser and online donations, staff and clients will be encouraged to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness month by wearing pink ribbons. Garbo and Hair to Stay want to raise awareness about the option for women to say no to hair loss.
