Hair Loss Awareness

Did you know August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month? It was brought to my attention the other day by my AVEDA representative, and it got me to thinking how common hair loss is to men and women, but we don’t talk about it because it can be such a sensitive issue.

We cannot deny that it is real. In fact, it’s estimated that 56 million people suffer from hair loss each year… and 40% of them are women. I can assure you, it’s okay to lose some hair each day. According to an article in Harvard Health Publishing, it is normal to lose 50 to 100 scalp hairs a day. However, excessive hair loss can be the result of a medical condition, heredity, acute stress, dietary issues, medications, grooming and styling habits, medical treatments, physical damage to the scalp, and the list goes on. Hereditary hair loss with age is the most common. Androgenetic alopecia is baldness, and it can be temporary or permanent. Surprisingly, some women are diagnosed with male pattern baldness, and it seems to be hereditary for both men and women.
