PFAS… you’ve definitely heard the term, but what are they?
Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of thousands of man-made chemicals that have been used since the 1940s to make a variety of consumer products resistant to water, grease, and stains. Highly persistent, PFAS can pervade the environment and human body and stay there for years.
Unfortunately, these “forever chemicals” are found in most makeup; manufacturers use them to increase water and moisture resistance. Mascara, long-lasting lipstick, eyeshadow, and foundations often have PFAS included in the ingredients. Because they don’t break down and are NOT biodegradable, they are required to be on an ingredient list if included in a product — when shopping, look for “PERFLUR.” These PFAS enter our bodies through the delicate skin by our eyes, mucous membranes, and lips. We ingest the chemicals by licking our lips or through daily makeup wear of items that contain them.

PFAS are linked to certain cancers, thyroid disease, liver damage, and known reproductive issues. This entire class of compounds is found in workplaces, kitchens, and even our drinking water… so what’s the solution? Throw away all of those “long-lasting” products and buy Aveda!
